‘Art to me is about feelings and, when it succeeds it is because it expresses something felt as well as seen'

Cate’s Story

Cate Rose is a multifaceted artist whose vibrant creations reflect a journey rich in exploration and passion. Having returned to her artistic roots following a successful career in Health, Cate's profound connection to creativity flourishes in her home town of Fremantle, Western Australia.

Cate was a former Special Art Scholarship student at Applecross College of the Arts. Now based in Fremantle, Western Australia, Cate has continued to explore the arts studying Printing & Graphic Art, attending Artist Engagement and Consultations at the Art Gallery of WA and summer school in Florence, Italy.  Cate’s interactive art book ‘Passages’, was located at the New York city’s Brooklyn Art Library which was the world’s largest collection of sketchbooks, until a recent fire closed the library. ‘Passages’ went out on tour of the USA in 2019.

The beautiful old town of Fremantle is close to her heart. In April 2024 Cate will be exhibiting beautiful large framed prints of Fremantle artworks from her book ‘Fremantle: City of Colour - a celebration of the old port city’ at The Staircase Gallery at Fremantle’s famous old National Hotel in the heart of the city. (Her previous Fremantle solo exhibition of prints on wood, ‘Seeing’ was almost a sell out).  In 2021, Cate exhibited as part of a group of female artists exploring the theme ‘Emergence’ at the Moores Contemporary Art Gallery in Fremantle. She has also been exhibiting and selling work in the eastern states as part of group exhibitions including the Brunswick Gallery, Melbourne, Walker St Gallery and in the Dandenong. In June 2023 she participated in an innovative public art event displaying artworks from artists all over th e work as part of ‘The Art Tunnel’ Barcelona, an immersive experience for commuters traversing one of Barcelona’s busiest train stations.

Most recently Cate was awarded a commission from the City of Melville to create an artwork to beautify local parks. Her artwork ‘Home Free’ can be see brightening up irrigation boxes with the first one recently being installed at Beasly Park, Leeming.

With her Print and design skills Cate is also adept at surface design, creating an array of special items including tote bags, backpacks, and clothing with a bit of a whimsical twist.

Always interested in the human condition, Cate’s expressive style is full of emotion.

Approach

Cate enjoys exploring different mediums as a mode of expression and has studied Fine Art, painting, fashion, photography and graphic design. She is in the habit of taking a sketchbook in her bag with her so she can observe life wherever she goes.

Her favourite way of working starts with pen and ink on paper. Cate layers dark and light, mimicking a complex swirl of feelings with her sensitive monochrome mark-making. In some works she adds layers of vivid colours with crayon, watercolour or collage, taking many hours to gently build and express the unspoken.

Cate also works in acrylics, watercolours and with new technologies, creating digital works which can be printed on beautiful papers.

Mother Earth

I am conscious of the burning planet and like to recycle and reuse materials. I think art is an adventure and I will reuse things I don’t feel work or turn them into something else. Everything has potential and my collage work affords lots of exciting opportunities to rethink and repurpose materials. I keep little bits and pieces of things because I often find places where they are perfect!

This artwork of Craig has been created on a heavyweight art paper which has been painted over. I didn’t like what I had done so painted over it with lovely colours and worked on it again. I was very happy with the result and I think it adds to the exciting texture of the final work.

I also make conscious choices about materials. The beautiful German etching paper used for my fine art reproductions is produced from sustainable sources, contains no plastic and is certified Vegan-friendly (contains no animal products).

My art card series are printed on eco-friendly sustainably source Birchwood, backed with envirocare blank paper. The accompanying envelopes are 100% post-consumer recycled brown paper.

Where possible I make packaging for orders by hand from previously used card and papers – even it takes a bit longer than simply buying postbags.

By no means do I claim to be perfect in my practices but I am consciously making an effort.
